The following is the report, by
Elise Mooney that featured on Channel 9's A
current Affairs program on the 8th of February,
discussing the savings that can be obtained when
purchasing some medications online.
"Online pharmacies mean it's possible to slash your
pharmacy bills — but those who need the savings most
may not be computer-savvy enough to benefit.
Elderly people are the hardest hit by escalating
medicine bills, which make it tough to make ends meet.
Paul Versteege from the Pensioners and Superannuants
Association says many older Australians are doing it
tough.
"We have to put the blame fairly and squarely on the
pharmaceutical companies who are maximising their
profits," Mr Versteege says.
One way to make significant savings on medicine bills
is by buying generic pharmaceuticals from regular
chemists.
But there are even greater savings to be found on the
internet.
At one website — Online
Chemist — you can save large amounts on many drugs
purchases.
A four-month bonus pack of Regaine, which retails for
$140 in the shops, sells for $118.95 on the website.
Even Viagra can be bought at a knockdown price —
$59.95, instead of $70 retail.
But Mr Versteege says many elderly people are not able
to use the internet, so are missing out on these low
prices.
"At the moment only 50 per cent of retirees are
online, so 50 per cent by definition miss out on the
cheaper drugs," he says.
